In collaboration with

Le Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM)

The Merian Center for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM) is jointly organising a conference entitled ‘Food Feeding and Feedback’ with the English Department at the Université de Sousse. The conference will be held from 10 to 12 December 2024.

Context:

The intersection of food, feeding, and feedback in humanities encompasses various aspects of human nature, culture, and creativity, inviting ethical, epistemological, phenomenological, and political reflections. Food serves as a thematic element in art and literature, symbolizing issues such as consumption, identity, globalization, gender roles, power dynamics, and social status. Culturally, food intersects with identity construction and social affiliations. In political discourse, food is central to debates on sovereignty and security, impacting global hunger and inequality, particularly affecting vulnerable regions like Somalia and Yemen due to conflicts in the Global North. Scientifically, food is examined in terms of human nutrition and learning processes, while linguistics and media studies offer avenues for critical inquiry into food-related metaphors and representation. Overall, food serves as a multifaceted lens through which to explore diverse academic fields and social issues.
