Environmental Sustainability and Autocratic Governance in Morocco by Katharina Nicolai

We are thrilled to share the publication of “Environmental Sustainability and Autocratic Governance in Morocco” by MECAM PI Katharina Nicolai, the first volume in MECAM’s book series Perspectives on the Maghreb with Routledge.

The book examines Morocco’s green energy and environmental sustainability policies under King Mohammed VI. It proposes that the Moroccan regime strategically instrumentalizes this policy field to bolster regime resilience through legitimation strategies directed both at domestic and foreign audiences, as well as cooptive practices aimed at generating support among national as well as foreign elites. Through the approach of autocracy research, the book offers a new perspective on the country’s environmental turn. It also explores how these policies intersect with elite cooptation and Morocco’s claims over Western Sahara.
